According to Bay Localize, despite being the nation’s largest food producer, California currently imports more than half of its food. The International Society for Ecology and Culture says 59% of our state’s demand for raw farm products is met with imported products.

At Pie Ranch, a Pescadero based sustanaible farming practices organization, soil fertility, biological diversity and local markets are the emphasis.

Mary Ann Brooks talks in this segment about Pie Ranch’s youth programs, how chicken and goats keep youth engaged, and how her grandparents sharecropping history kept her connected to the land.
